Maintenance of hats

1 – Velvet felt and melusine felt:

The material :

Velvet felt is, like cashmere for a jumper, soft to the touch. It is also flattering to the face thanks to its velvety appearance which is reflected on the face. A hat made from this material is light and waterproof.

Melusine felt is a long-haired, soft felt. Therefore, a hat made of melusine felt is soft to the touch. It has a fur-like appearance. It is extremely flattering to the face. This soft material is also waterproof.

Care :

To maintain velvet and melusine felts, they should be brushed regularly with a clothes brush to remove any dust and to raise the pile.

Brushing gives the hat its lustre and shine.

During the summer season, it is best to keep your hat in your nice hat box offered by the MFD. It will be better protected than on your coat rack.

With time, the primer that gives it a certain hardness could come off depending on the temperature changes in your house. The hat box is the best protection. FD hats can be refurbished if necessary. The high quality of the material used means that it can be “revived” despite the years.

If you apply a lot of make-up, the headband (the grosgrain ribbon that is placed inside the hat according to your measurements) can be protected by a protective plaster that can be found in pharmacies. It can be removed easily without leaving a trace of glue on the tape. Be careful when it is very hot and your forehead is hot, it can come off.

You can also occasionally remove the headband with a little methylated spirits.

The MFD can, if you wish, for your favourite and regularly worn hat, change and renew this ribbon.

2 – Banana fibre:

The material :

The banana fibre is supple, very fine with a pearly sheen. This material is natural, eco-responsible and of very good quality.

This fibre from banana trees is often left on the ground or burnt. But thanks to the circular economy, it is purified and placed fibre by fibre in old looms. The result of this painstaking work is this sublime linen-like material. Moreover, thanks to this new opportunity, many women have been able to become independent and self-sufficient.
Finally, after its arrival, the material is delicately and manually coloured. It is then sculpted and takes shape under the skillful fingers of the designer.
In the creations, hats, headdresses, bags signed by the House of Fabienne Delvigne, you will very often find this slightly pearly raw material, a symbiosis of nature, humanism and art.

Maintenance :

It could happen that, with time, the finish given to the hat could fade according to the changes of temperature in your house. The hat box is the best protection. FD hats can be refurbished if necessary. It is best to keep it in your nice hat box offered by MFD.

If there are foundation, make-up or other stains, you can always try to gently remove them with methylated spirits on a small clean white cloth. Ideally, you should try this in a hidden corner of the hat.

Parabuntal :

The material:

Parabuntal is a rigid vegetable fibre from the Philippines. The fibre comes from a shrub from which the fibres are removed from the trunk pith with tweezers. The fibres are then woven together one by one. This is a meticulous weaving process that can take more than a year to complete. This skill is passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, this sublime material is no longer produced. The House of Fabienne Delvigne is fortunate enough to still have some of its products. It is with infinite honour that she works this exceptional material.

Parasisal :

The material:

Parasisal is a very fine and beautiful straw. Craftsmen with great expertise patiently wove it by hand. Nowadays, this straw is no longer produced and this ancestral work has disappeared.

The House of Fabienne Delvigne has always worked not only with eco-responsible materials but also with high quality. She still has a few specimens of this magnificent straw. She likes to share it with her customers who appreciate the material and this exceptional work.
